SNOW: YES - NO

…have to endure it!

During the 11 years that I was the director of a horse-riding school in Ocala, FL out of hundreds of students that we trained from different states and countries, about 35% had moved to Ocala and surrounding areas, because they were so tired of dealing with snow where they used to live. Furthermore, 67% of the residents in the subdivision with almost 1,100 homes that I reside at, came from areas where snows every Winter.

So, let’s discuss the “pros” and “cons” of living in an area where it snows to find out why this migration happens. I will start with the "PROS":

1) It’s beautiful to see snow, especially during the holidays.

2) It’s awesome to play with the snow and to make funny sculptures with it.

3) The ‘cotton-looking’ landscape invites us to be at home and to drink something hot.  What about a delicious hot chocolate with crackers and butter?

4) Great to go skiing, although it must be done in the appropriate places.

5) It’s the opportunity to wear the best winter clothes.

I found five "PROS" of having snow. But maybe you can find more…

Now, let’s talk about some of the "CONS":

1) Snow has to be removed from the sidewalks and garage entrances.

2) It’s extremely cold to be outside for too long.

3) Some days, it’s impossible to leave home, even when it’s urgent.

4) The outdoor activities are so limited (NO playing golf, No biking, No water sports, No hiking, No horse riding).

5) Arthritis and any old bone fractures hurt much more.

6) It’s very dangerous to drive cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, and often there are fatal multi-car crashes.

7) The cars’ chassis and suspension get rusty. And sometimes other parts, also.

8) It’s hard for the lawn and most plants outside.

9) The heater works very hard (many hours) to keep a livable temperature inside the house.

10) Snow is heavy for the roofs and, as it melts, may lead to leaks inside.

11) Dogs often refuse to go out when it’s too cold… So, where do they poop?

12) Airports are closed during the snowstorms.

13) In late winter, there is an increase of Mud on the lawns and roads.

I found 13 "CONS" of snow in my list, but you may know more.

In summary, we found 5 "PROS" and 13 "CONS". What is your opinion about living in a place where it snows?
